FREE EOD for Metastock-How to do it!

Posted by BIG on Wednesday, 17 February 1999, at 11:13 p.m.

This should work using Metastock 6.5 and downloader. I hope I have not left out any steps. Looks confusing, but once you practice a few times it gets easier.

To build a base of all the currently traded futures contract
access the teggen site, http://www.teggen.com/

Click on to download data "click here"
This produces a new screen with all the commodity symbols.
Clicking on a symbol creates a list of contracts for that symbol starting in 1996 thru the present
Examples: LB96N,LB98U, LB99H, LB99X,,,,(you get the idea )

This is the most time consuming part, but only has to be done once, after this you will only download a single file on a daily basis.

You will have to download each contract individually that you wish to have and save in text format ( to a file location of your choosing ( mine is D:DATAFREE )and rename it ( I use the format to rename- ad9h.txt )

No further processing is necessary, you change nor add anything prior to using MS downloader and converting data.

Mutiple files can be converted by downloader.
To use downloader-
You will click on :
File Type: ASCII Text
Click on browse to find your data location
( mine is D:/datafree )
and the file name to be converted:

C99H, C99Z, W99H, W99Z, LB99H, LB99X etc, etc,...
You can "control" click on each file and it will add it to the list to be converted.

Now you need to pick a destination for your data. Mine is

D:/dataprocessed
You can also use your browse function for this. This next step will take a few minutes. Click OK.

If converting mutiple symbols , it converts the first and then a pop up screen "Ticker Symbol" opens, click close and it processes the second and repeats this process, etc, etc...

(I have not entered a name in this Ticker Symbol Box, I do not know what the end results will look like if entering a symbol or name. I only know my way of performing these tasks work.)

In D:/data processed
sub files are produced ( A, B, C, D etc., etc. )
D:/A:/AD9H and any other AD contracts you may have

saved and converted. B:/beanoil will be here

You get the idea!

Some files such as AD and JY for example will need to be tweaked a little to make teggen decimal match with Jack Carl or Access Futures Decimals.
Teggen "AD"= 63.38 ; Jack Carl or Access Futures "AD"=.6338
I will post this under another post, " Edit teggen data"

"Now you have your data base, tomorrow you will download a single file, but it MUST be processed!

Go to either:
http://www.accesstrading.com/quotes.html
or
http://www.jackcarl.com/quotes2.html( what I am using )
Pick the appropriate file date.
Click "file" and "save as"
Click arrow on "save as type"
and click/highlight "textfile"

Find your destination file in the menu choices above what you have just done ( DataFree again for me )

Click "Save"

Open http://www.fdataprocess.com/
Click on "Process your EOD data here"
Click "browse"
Find your file
Enter your "date" and "Metastock format 1"
Your choice on Volume and open interest option
Format B ( or C I think )I use B.
Click start process.
Save it to disk, in file of your choice again,
( It will be saved as a cgi file.)

PS (if you can't find the cgi file - you need to change the choices from text files to all files ).

Now open downloader. and repeat process of above.
Daily data will be distributed to the appropriate files.
This may take a few minutes , but can be done unattended.

Close downloader.
open Metastock

Ta DAHHH!!!!!

Re: Editing Data from Teggen or How to make those suckers match!

Posted by BIG on Wednesday, 17 February 1999, at 11:36 p.m., in response to FREE EOD for Metastock-How to do it!, posted by BIG on Wednesday, 17 February 1999, at 11:13 p.m.

Open your new metastock AD9H chart created with Teggen data.

Right click on a price-
Choose "Edit Data"
This opens Downloaders edit data screen.

Right click on a price in the spread sheet-
choose "manual adjust"
Adjust all dates
( this is easiest done the day you set this data file up-trust me on this one-you will get confused if you wait until day 2 to do it)
Click boxes- Open, High, Low, Close
Click on appropriate operand
And adjust all data except volume and open interest

Example Teggen's "AD" would be divided by 100 to make the decimals match with Jack Carl's "AD".

Close this window, save the changes when it asks, close downloader. Close metastock file that is open and reopen it, your data has changed.

Now when you convert tomorrows single file, the 2 datas will match.

Dwonloading free Metastock Data-update

Posted by BIG on Wednesday, 24 February 1999, at 4:21 p.m.

When downloading historical data from teggen
change the name of the Orange Juice contracts from
JO***.txt to OJ***.txt
Need to do this to match data up with daily updates from Jack Carl.If you have already started the data collection process and are using it you will notice that they do not match.

I believe the easiest way yo correct this is to delete all oj data under O with downloader, resave info from Teggin changing the name from jo to oj. You can then delete all jo info under J.

There may be and should be a way of doing this with downloader, but I am not that proficient yet.

This is the second snag I have encounterd, but a small one. The first was somehow I reconverted 2 cgi files, one from 2/16 and 2/19 on the 19th, so it gave me an extra day of data. I know I did something wrong to do this, so to prevent this mistake again . I now delete all cgi files prior to creating a new one with downloader.

Hope this helps

 UPDATE 4/2/99
When updating from Jack Carl Site on days that the Market is closed in some futures.
Such as Grains, Softs, Metals, Meats, but open in Currencies and Financials.

You must go into downloader and delete the data from 4/1 forward prior to downlaoding new data on the next open Market day on these individual contracts. It's not that hard, is a little time consuming, but you pay for this data either in Money or in time. The end result if you do not do this si some pretty funky, out of whack charts because it lists yesterday as a market day with a range from 4/1 low to 0.0. Totally distorts chart
